CABEC’s Associate Energy Analyst (AEA) accreditation
An Associate Energy Analyst (AEA) is a professional who has demonstrated competency in California’s Title 24, Part 6 Building Energy Efficiency Standards (Energy Code). The AEA accreditation is intended for individuals who work with or support Energy Code compliance and/or are developing the experience and modeling proficiency required for CEA certification.
AEAs are accredited in either the Residential or Nonresidential track, with the Nonresidential track encompassing both nonresidential and multifamily buildings. The designation is applicable to a wide range of professionals, including those new to the energy industry, as well as individuals in roles such as building officials, designers, engineers, manufacturers, utility staff, and regulatory personnel.
The AEA accreditation signifies that an individual has achieved a recognized level of Energy Code knowledge and a commitment to professional development within the field of California Energy Code compliance. Accreditation is achieved by maintaining active membership in CABEC, passing the multiple-choice portion of the residential or nonresidential CEA examination, and completion of required professional training.
AEAs are required to complete annual continuing education to maintain accreditation and remain current with evolving code and industry practices. The AEA program is updated with each California Energy Code cycle, and accredited individuals must pass the CEA multiple-choice recertification examination and complete required professional training to maintain their accreditation.

Separate AEA accreditations are available for Residential and Nonresidential Energy Standards.
The AEA designation recognizes candidates who successfully pass the multiple-choice portion of the CEA exam. It serves as an intermediate credential for professionals seeking advanced knowledge of California Energy Code requirements or working toward full CEA certification.

AEA Requirements
Candidates must:
- Be a current CABEC member in good standing
- Pass the multiple-choice portion of the current CEA exam
- Complete at least nine hours of continuing education annually
- Agree to the CABEC Code of Ethics and Bylaws
Approved candidates will receive an official AEA certificate and be listed on the CABEC website. Accreditation is updated with each California energy code cycle.
AEA members also receive CABEC membership benefits, including a profile in the “Find a Consultant” directory for potential employers and clients.
For many professionals, the AEA serves as a pathway toward full Certified Energy Analyst (CEA) certification. CABEC also offers mentorship opportunities, including the Energy Code Specialist (ECS) Academy Mentorship Program for Building Inspectors and Plan Examiners.
